Weekly People Column by PRO Brendan Ennis - 8 Sept 08
Wexford
Wheelers have a Leinster Champion in their ranks as Martin Misgayski
won the Leinster Road Race Championships in Dundalk last Sunday. This
is the culmination of a great year for Martin, a popular member of the
club, who has been achieving top placings all year including recently
at the all Ireland hillclimb championships. As the surname suggests,
Martin is originally from Poland. Maybe somebody should try to persuade
him to take out an Irish passport in time for London 2012!
Murt
Doyle of Slaney Cycling Club continued his run of good results by
taking second place. Conchubhar O Crualaoich again did very well in his
race, finishing eighth. These results follow Luke Maguire's brilliant
fourth place in the U-16 race the Leinster Championships in Kilmessan
last Sunday week.
Denis McCarthy (Murphy & Gunn) won the
last event of the 2008 Bike Shop league last Friday week, an 8km time
trial from Oylegate to Ferrycarrig. This win gave Denis the overall
league victory from Martin Gill (Wexford Wheelers) and Cathal Redmond
(South East Road Club). Underage placings went to Luke Maguire, John
Clancy and Sam Duggan.
The five fastest (scratch) times on the
night were Declan Kinch (Murphy & Gunn) 10.13; Denis McCarthy
10.28; Conchubhar O Crualaoich (WW) 10.43; Martin Gill 11.05 and Cathal
Redmond (South East Road Club) 11.07.
The time trial provided us
with a glimpse of the future of Wexford cycling as 8 year old Philip
Gordon and 9 year old Patrick Dobbs (Jnr) made their competitive
debuts. Both completed the time trial with little difficulty
accompanied by their fathers.
The club is again grateful to
Johnny and Sylvia of The Bike Shop for their supporting the league and
to all those who assisted in the running of the races.
Luke Maguire's good form continued as he placed 4th in the U-16 race the Leinster Championships in Kilmessan last Sunday week.
The
tour was well attended last Sunday and there were three groups. Martin
Gill took the training spin to New Ross and back via Sliabh Coillte.
George Ryan lead the touring group to ferns and back and Billy Roche's
group went to Enniscorthy and back.
Pembrokeshire Freewheelers - Rosslare to Mount Leinster and back - 8 Sept 08
Thanks
for your help. We had a great day out coming over the night before and
staying in Rosslare so we got a leisurely start. The ride up to Mount
Leinster took about 3.5 hours but then we had to wait as the Tour of
Ireland started that day and they were on the King of the Mountain
stage coming from the opposite direction. It really was the highlight
of the trip as we didn't even know it was on until we reached Kiltealy.
We even got our pictures on the tour report at velonews. www.velonews.com/article/82407
After
the tour past we climbed mount Leinster in the mist and it was a tough
one which we admit we walked some. Coming down was daunting but I let
fly and did it in 5 mins. Two of my friends brakes over heated (I
didn't use them that much) and stopped then one of them got 2
punctures. So we were delayed a bit fixing that but after that an
uneventful return to Rossslare for the night boat home. 95 miles round
trip at 11.5 mph which is pretty good for us lot.
Thanks
for your advice and that website climbbybike is brilliant which I'd not
seen before. Now one of my favorites so off to climb Mount Ventoux next
month I hope.
Best wishes and if your over the water give us a call.
Jonathan Birdsall.

Paddy
Kinsella was the winner of the third round of the Bike Shop League, for
the Tommy O'Brien Cup, last Friday. Sam Mealy finished second. The race
was held over four laps of the Camross circuit. Veteran cyclist Paddy
and junior cyclist Sam did rode well and took full advantage of their
time handicap to stay clear of the chasing group.

the Tommy O'Brien Cup, last Friday. Sam Mealy finished second. The race
was held over four laps of the Camross circuit. Veteran cyclist Paddy
and junior cyclist Sam did rode well and took full advantage of their
time handicap to stay clear of the chasing group. A great 1-2 for
Wexford Wheelers.
Cathal Redmond of the South East Road Club
continued his recent good form by taking third place. Carthal now leads
the league by one point from Martin Gill going into the final round
which
takes place next Friday, 29th August. This will be an 8km time trial
from Oylegate to Ferrycarrig. Sign on is at Oylegate at 6.30 with first
rider off at 7pm.
Martin Mysgajski won the B/C category of the
national hillclimb championships in Donegal at the weekend. He also
finished seventh overall. A native of Poland, Martin joined Wexford
Wheelers this year. As well as being a popular member of the club he
has shown great talent and speed on the bike with consistent high
placings in local and national events.
Luke Maguire competed in
the national underage championships in Kanturk over the weekend. He
rode well, especially in the time trial, but was out of the medals.
Next up for him is the Leinster Championships next weekend in Kilmessan
and we wish him good luck.
County Waterford was taken over by
cyclists last Sunday as over two thousand riders, from all over Ireland
and abroad, took part in the second Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford. The
scene was nothing short of spectacular as the massive peleton left
Dungarvan at 8.30am. This has now become Ireland 's premier
touring/randonee event. There were three routes 60/100/160km. The
longest route included climbs to Mahon Falls and Crohaun and, coming as
they do towards the end of the day, made for a challenging cycle. Well
done to all the Wheelers who took part; Gary O '>Flaherty, George
Ryan, Martin Gill, Michael O 'Flaherty, Mark Gurhy, Patsy McCafferty,
Eamon Roche and Brendan Ennis.
Despite so many members taking part in events around the country, ten cyclists turned up at the Bullring for the Sunday tour.
Weekly People Column by PRO Brendan Ennis - 20 August 08
Cathal
Redmond of the South East Road Club won the second round of the Bike
Shop League last Friday to retain the Jim Whitty Cup he won last year.
The race was over 42km from Camross to New Ross and back. Martin Gill
came a close second in a sprint finish and Denis McCarthy (Murphy &
Gunn) was third. Luke Maguire was first in the underage category.
Again, the club is grateful to the marshals and drivers who helped out.
The
third race of the Bike Shop League takes place next Friday, 22nd August
over three laps of the Camross circuit (34km). Sign on is at Camross
Ballroom at 6.30 with race start at 7.00. Fee is 5 Euro.
Martin
Mysgajski, Conchubhar O Crualaoich, Martin Gill and Patsy McCafferty
have been keeping Wexford Wheelers to the fore in recent cycle races in
the south east region. Martin (Mysgajski) was a recent winner in
Comeragh Cycling Club's Waterford League. He was also second in Slaney
Cycling Club's Eddie Tobin memorial Race. Conchubhar won a recent South
East Road Club race in Gorey and finished in a brilliant third place in
the vet. category in the Suir 3 Day Race. Martin (Gill) has produced
his usual aggressive riding resulting in consistent high placings while
Patsy has been riding well in his first year of serious competition.
The
Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford takes place on Sunday next, 24th August.
This is one of the great national touring events and Wheelers were well
represented last year. Again, all Wheelers are asked to consider taking
part as Sean Kelly has been a good friend and supporter of our club.
There are three routes with varying distances and climbs. More
information is available from www.theseankellytour.com

me to introduce myself. My name is Eoin Ryan and i'm a triathlete
living in Dublin but originally from Castlebridge in Wexford. I
understand you guys held a tri race in Rosslare last year. Wexford as
you probably know doesn't have a triathlon club in the county. Wicklow
and Waterford do.
I'd like to set one up in Wexford. Do you
think there would be much interest in this? maybe you know people who
have expressed an interest in this. If so could you please pass on
their details to me.

Kilmore Quay Seafood Festival Race - CANCELLED
Weekly People Column by PRO Brendan Ennis - 1 July 08
Local
cycling focus was on Enniscorthy last Friday as Sean Kelly unveiled a
monument to commerate the 10th anniversary of the Tour de France stage
start in the town.
This was followed by childrens races in the town and the first running of the Ellen Construction Cup race.
The
25 mile was won by Murt Doyle (Slaney Cycling Club) who finished 40
seconds ahead of the next group. Mark Driver (Bray Wheelers) was
second, John Maguire (South East Road Club) was third with Martin
Misgayski (Wexford Wheelers), Conchubhar O Crualaoich (WW) and Gianni
Ponzi (SCC) fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.Joe Rossiter also won
a prize for first C Cat outside the top 6.
Luke Maguire was first in the U16 race last Friday in Enniscorthy.
Unfortunately,
Wexford Wheelers Simon Lambert was hospitalised after crashing out of
the race on a downhill stretch coming out of Kiltealy. Simon burst onto
the local racing scene this year and surprised many with his immediate
show of talent and speed. He has also been competing well in open races
around the country. All in the club wish Simon a speedy recovery and
hope to see him back on the bike soon.
Martin Gill and Gary
O'Flaherty both rode the national Championships in Midleton on
Sunday. Both completed the tough race but were out of the prizes
Next
Saturday sees Slaney Cycling Club's 10th Anniversary Tour de France
cycle from Enniscorthy to Cork, taking the same route as the famous
race did 1998. First group is scheduled to leave at 7.45am. For further
details, see www.slaneycyclingclub.com

Next Wheelers’s race
is the Kilmore Quay Seafood Festival Race on Friday 11th July. The Tour
of Loch Garman will be on Sunday, 13th July.
There will be a committee meeting on Monday 7th July at 7.30pm in the Riverbank House Hotel.
Get Well - 29 July 08
Get
well soon to Simon Lambert who took a nasty fall on Friday night at the
Ellen Construction Cup. Simon, who is new to the club and relatively
new to cycling is quickly becoming one of the most talented riders in
the club. Holy moly, just try and sit on his wheel up a climb! Your
heart rate monitor will pronounce you dead!
We hope to see you out trashing the legs off us again before too long!
From your many friends in the club.

Wexford
Wheelers racers were in Dunlavin last week as Mick O’Flaherty, Gary
O’Flaherty, Martin Gill, Martin Misgaiski, Joe Rossiter and Cochubhar O
Crualaoich took part in the Kevin McInerney Memorial Race.
In a
tough race, Martin Gill broke clear with two others (including eventual
winner, Martin O’Loughlin) on the second lap of four. This trio stayed
clear to the end of the race. Martin Misgaiski and Conchubhar O
Crualaoich managed to make it up to the break towards the end of the
third lap but the group was further split on the final climb.
In
a sprint to the line, Martin (Misgaiski) finished fifth, Conchubhar was
eighth and Martin (Gill) finished in the next group only a couple of
seconds behind. Conchubhar also sixth in the recent Christy McManus
Memorial Race in Roundwood.
Martin Myzgayski placed second in
the Ashford Grand Prix yesterday and Joe Rossiter finished eighth.
Martin also placed 4th last week in the Waterford League race and is
now 3rd in the league table and 1st in the C Category. Martin Gill has
also been finishing consistently well in this league.
David
Curtis, Alan Donoghue, Brendan Ennis, Oliver Gargan, Mark Gurhy, Simon
Lambert, Patsy McCafferty and George Ryan took part in last week’s
Wicklow 200. This a 200 km (125 mile) cycle around the Wicklow
Mountains and includes tough climbs of Sally Gap, Wicklow Gap and
Sliabh Maan.
While the Wicklow 200 is a randonnee
(non-competitive) event, it is a hard, long-distance cycle involving
long hours on the bike. Well done to all endured the 2008 ‘Wicklow’.
Other
upcoming, local touring/leisure/randonnee events are Wexford Wheelers
Tour of Loch Garman, Slaney Cycling Club’s 10th Anniversary Tour de
France ride from Enniscorthy to Cork on www.slaneycyclingclub.com and the Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford www.theseankellytour.com).
A
welcome recent visitor on our tour was Ciara Fitzpatrick. Ciara is a
London-based traithlete, originally from Kilmore Quay. She was only
home for the weekend but brought her bike along so as not to miss
training. We hope she enjoyed the spin and hope to see her on the tour
again.
For the Summer months, Wexford Wheelers Sunday tours leave the Bullring at the earlier time of 9am

Our French friend Aurélien submitted his own jersey design. I quite like it! What do you think?

Aurélien - 20 May 08
"I
had to wait for sunny days in order to take a picture of the only
Wheeler who can ride on the right side of the road (well, if we except
the ones who forget their right and their left when they come back from
the Stores on a Sunday evening...). You can see I have a new bike:
people always told me to listen to oldest people, so I have listened to
George who told me many times I had to buy a road-race bike. I will
have to come back in order to know if this bike is as comfortable as
the previous one for speaking of History with John McCormack."
Aurélien.

Congratulations to the winners and to all those who took part. A big
thank-you to Paddy Kinsella and Killeens service station for sponsoring
the event.
Hhhmmmm Cake - 19 May 08
A
well deserved pat on the back to Slaney CC for yet another well run Mt
Leinster challenge. As most will agree it has become one of the top
events on the touring calendar (if not the most painful!)
As
good as the organisation was and as good as the route is, nothing
compares to the food stop! What can I say to do it justice! It is worth
climbing that Corrabutt wall of death several times while riding a
child's bike, wearing barb wire underpants, carrying your nagging
mother-in-law on your back and listening to Phil Collin's greatest
hits. Actually I exaggerate........nothing is worth having to listen to
Phil Collins. My point, really great cakes!
Not a boast but
happy to report that the first man up the wall of death for a second
year running was a wheeler, Martin Mizjayski.
Congratulations to Slaney again for a great Mt Leinster Cake I mean challenge.!
Weekly People Column by PRO Brendan Ennis - 13 May 08
Wexford
Wheelers underage cyclists Simon Duggan and Cormac O’Rourke finished
3rd and 6th respectively in a race in Dungarvan last Sunday. These were
fine results for two up-and-coming youngsters in a race held on a
tough, undulating, 14 mile circuit with a tough 1.5 mile uphill finish.
The
club was well represented in the senior races and Martin Gill finished
in the main bunch in the combined A/B race. Mick O’Flaherty, Albert
Walsh, Johnny Gordon, Gary O’Flaherty, Joe Rossiter, Martin Misgaiski,
Simon Lambert and Conchubhar O Crualaoich took part in the C/Vet/Junior
race. Martin and Simon were particularly active in the race. Simon
broke away with Slaney Cycling Club’s Murt Doyle and built up a long
lead before being caught by the bunch. After the climb, Murt broke away
again and Conchubhar made it up to the break which contained twelve
riders. This break built up a lead of 1.30 over the main group.
Conchubhar eventually finishing in 5th place, Murt 8th and Martin 13th.
Touring takes centre stage this weekend on the local cycling
calender as Slaney Cycling Club host their 3rd annual Mount Leinster
Challenge next Sunday (18th May). There are 3 routes so there should be
one to suit cyclists of all abilities. The event HQ and sign-on is at
Bellefield GAA complex. The legendary food stop will again be in
Kiltealy. It is worth taking part in the event just to partake of the
wonderful food on offer! For more details, see
www.slaneycyclingclub.com.
The final event of the Liam Bennett
Time Trial League, sponsored by Kinsella’s of Killeens, takes place
next Tuesday, 20th May. Distance is 55km and sign on is at 6pm at the
Whitford House Hotel.
Wheelers are delighted to see an increase
in numbers on the Sundays tours and new members are always welcome. We
especially and belatedly welcome Joe Rossiter and Martin Misgaiski from
New Ross, two popular and experienced racing cyclists. Martin in
particular is showing great form and achieving high placings in open
races this year.

Message Re Frank O'Rourke Memorial - 6 May 08
“Just
a short note to thank you for the great youth race and especially the
wonderful prizes at your recent race meeting. Unfortunately due to the
late prize giving we headed back to Limerick/Kanturk with the young
lads before the prizes were presented. I would like to thank the club
and especially if you would forward my thanks to your sponsor for the
wonderful prizes all the Kanturk lads were thrilled when they picked
them up at the weekend.
My
son Shane O’Hara finished 2nd in the under 12 and was delighted with
the hamper ,as a father of two underage riders I love to see useful
prizes ,the house is full of all sorts of trophy’s but bike bits are
far more useful and appreciated.
Keep up the good work we will be back .
Regards
Pat O’Hara”
Message From Super Villain Cave Durtis - 5 May 08
“Hi Guys,
While
at home recuperating from a knee operation, I have had a great chance
to note current trends in the cycling world. We seem to be ahead of the
posse in that a lot of the top cycling teams are now going for dark
tops [look at Team Health Net, Rock Racing, BMC, and Caisse D'Epargne,
and to alesser extent, Team Slipstream]. Certainly, Black and Dark
colours are in at
present.
What
I like about the Dark option is that it is certainly unique to our club
and not following any other teams or team colours. It is interesting
mix and will suit all builds and colour of bikes. The dark option will
blend in with our shorts. and tops we want to wear under it. I only
wish that we had good enough weather to have the colour black as a
problem. most of the above teams will be doing Le Tour where they are
going to face greater heat than we ever will here. I certainly favour
the dark option.
I
have to say that I also like the white option and wish to compliment
the designer on good work as both dark and light options are
attractive. However, I feel the dark option will be "More Cool" and
attractive for all.
Best Wishes to all
David Curtis”
