New Club Jersey!
After
622 meetings, the black v’s white debate, the black vote, the surprise
French vote, the sponsorship debate, global warming, the dummy
spitting, the boxing, the wrestling and the handbag throwing it is
finally here!!!!!
Our new jersey design!
So here it is!
Ready?
Da da!
We feel we must issue a health warning with this jersey! It may be dangerous when you wear it,
Women may run at you uncontrollably! Cars might collide into you mesmerised by your new shear beauty! Other cyclists may try to hurt you driven and enraged by their jealousy!
On the positive side, women may run at you uncontrollably!
A big thank-you to Martin Gill, the committee members and the jersey sub committee for all their hard work. DCU Cycling Cyclocross Race; Super Cross Cup 2008 Rnd 4
St Anne's Cyclocross Race hosted by DCU Cycling Club: Date: 14th December, Course open from 10:30am
The
final round of the Super Cross Cup 2008 will take part in the scenic St
Anne's park in Raheny. The Park, the second largest municipal park in
Dublin, is part of a former 500 acre estate assembled by members of the
Guinness family, beginning with Benjamin Lee Guinness in 1835. But on
the 14th of December will see fast racing to sort out the final
standings in the Super Cross Cup.
Will you fall foul to the
surging Naniken River? Will you stop to visit the Herculanean Temple?
Or, will you just visit the Duck Pond?
Bring your fastest tires,
strip off all non essential parts, and warm up your running legs. You
will not be disappointed. True too the spirit of cross, and adding a
bit of Belgian flair, steps and run-ups are the name of the day with
fast linking stages in-between. This course will make you suffer. But
sure that's what cross is all about.....isn't it?

Weekly People Column by PRO Brendan Ennis - 13 Oct 08
Wexford
Wheelers held their AGM last Friday. It was well attended and new
officers were elected with Paddy Kinsella assuming the role of Chairman
for the next year.
2008 was reflected upon as a good year for
the Wheelers with many cyclists competing well in open races and Martin
Misgajski becoming Leinster Road Race Champion.
Numbers have been high on Sunday tours and the club has been well represented at national touring events.
Recent
years, under the chairmanship of Pat Geoghegan, have seen great
advances made such as open racing in Wexford with the Frank O’Rourke
Memorial Race, the now annual Christmas Hamper Race and the Tour of
Loch Garman. It is hoped that the work he put in initiating these
events will serve the well for many years to come.
Did you know
that the first cycling club in Wexford was formed in 1880. A special
cap had to be worn by its members and no-one could take part in outings
without wearing the cap with ‘W.B.C.’ on the peak.
The club had
its rooms in Monck Street and starting time for each ‘meet’ was 4
o’clock in the evening. The first outing or tour began at the monument
on 8th March, 1880 and was lead by Mr. R.H. Shaw. The tour was over 15
miles and was a success. Cycling was confined to men and when the first
ladies took to the wheels there was consternation. Letters were written
to the local papers deploring the ‘forward hussies’ in defiance of all
the queenly traditions of their sex and indeed cycling sport. However
cycling soon became a popular pastime for men and women.
Like
many things, Wexford Wheelers have move with the times and everybody is
welcome to join us on our Sunday tours. We meet at the Bullring at
9.30am. All that is required is a roadworthy bike and a helmet. Weekly People Column by PRO Brendan Ennis - 7 Oct 08
Wexford
Wheelers cyclists featured prominently in last week's Noel Redmond
Memorial Race hosted by Slaney Cycling Club on the extended Old Dublin
Road circuit. Race winner Cathal Redmond (South East Road Club)
narrowly pipped Leinster and County Wexford Champion Martin

having ridden hard to take back the three minutes handicap of the
earlier starting group. Frank Dunne (SCC) was third with Frank O'Leary
(Bray Wheelers), Conchubhar O Crualaoich (WW) and Denis McCarthy
(Murphy & Gunn) fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
The
local competition season came to a close on Sunday last with Slaney

Next Sunday, 12th October, there will be a Coffee Kids Charity Cycle starting in Oylegate. The
Coffee Kids is an exceptional charity whose work amongst the
villagers and coffee workers of the plantations of Nicaragua is
inspirational. The building of schools and co-ops in these impoverished
coffee villages to help these resilient and resourceful people has been
mainly done through fund raising. All local cyclists are asked to turn
up for a leisurely cycle and at the same time help those worse off than
ourselves, even in these uncertain times.
Sign-on will be at
Slaney Inn Car Park, Oylegate, Co Wexford at 9 45am. Entry fee 10 euro.

Local Polish Man is County Champion
Martin Mizgajski Senior County Champion and Bill Jordan, County Champion (vets) in Enniscorthy on Sunday
Martin
Mizgajski has become the first foreign national to win the Wexford
County Champion road race. This victory comes at the end of a hugely
succesful season, that also saw him take the Leinster Champion’s title
in Dundalk at the beginning of this month.
Earlier in the
year, he also took the National Hill Climbing Champions title (category
B) which was held in Mamore Gap, Donegal. All in all its been a
relentlessly run of success this year for the adopted New Ross man.
“I’ve
won a number of cash prizes, but I much prefer to get a cup. The
Leinster Championship was dedicated to the memory of Paddy Neary and
the cup dates back to 1966. It feels very special to be included in a
list of champions that goes back that far. It makes me feel connected
to the local history.” And so it should, when you think of it Martin is
writing himself into the local history books afterall.
Martin’s
story is one of hard work and total focus. Indeed its an inspiration to
anyone who has come to live here, or indeed for any of us who have ever
lived abroad.
He took part in his first triathalon competition
aged 16. “It wasn’t always about winning,” he says, because at this
time, Martin recalls he was the last person to leave he water. He made
sure he finished the race nonetheless. “Its important psychologically
to do this,” he still maintains.
Following a short stint
working in the local police station, Martin decided to leave home and
see what Ireland had to offer himself and his girlfriend Editha. (this
is the same girlfriend he cycled to see in Amsterdam, from Poland. At
that time he cycled 400km a day for 3 days, carrying a 30kg backpack
that included the water he needed for the trip! Anyway, it must have
been worth it, because the 2 married in 2006)
Upon first
arriving in Ireland, Martin found work in a bar, but soon found his
fitness slipping away due to the difficult working hours, and adjusting
to the local diet! He was determined to win back his previous form and
by 2006 he was in full training for the Ironman competition.
Just
to remind readers, the Ironman consists of 3.8km swim, 180km bike and
42.2km run. Martin again made history in becoming the first New Ross
man to complete the distance.
To give you an idea of the
training commitment that was involved in preparing for such an event:
he was training on average 5 hours a day, 2 hours cycling, 2 hours
swimming and 1 hour running, 7 days a week. On top of all this while
undertaking all this training, he was holding down a job that entailed
shift work and varied sleep patterns. And all this in a country that
was new to him, at a time when he was only slowly but surely building
up new friendships, when you think of it, it really adds up to a
remarkable achievement.
The training he was doing at the time
was good for stamina, less so for speed. In the meantime, his approach
to training has shifted somewhat. His training more recently has become
more scientific, and he says he trains harder and that re incorporates
more rest into his regime, and consequently, gets better results. To
give you a taster of some of his routine, he has been know to cycle up
Brandon House hill 10 times in a row, all out as an interval training
to build power.
So what’s next for New Ross’s golden-boy? As ever, Martin’s not short on ambition or plans. He’s
looking wistfully at a few stage races next year, that is races that
will run over a number of days, such as the Gorey 3 day, the Hill
Climbing Championships and on to the National Championships, where he’d
love to gain a podium place. I know for one, once he sets his goal, I
wouldn’t put money against him.
Martin would like to thank his sponsors The Power Centre, Woodbine Industrail Estate for all their help. Weekly People Column by PRO Brendan Ennis - 22 Sept 08
Wexford
Wheelers’ Martin Misgajski added another title to his list as he won
the Wexford County Cycling Championship last Sunday. Already Leinster
Champion, Martin was part of a three man breakaway which formed early
in the race, hosted by Slaney Cycling Club, over 3 laps of a 14 mile
circuit in the Enniscorthy/The Ballagh/Oulart area. Cathal Redmond
(South East Road Club) and Murt Doyle (Slaney Cycling Club) were the
others in the break. This trio finished two minutes ahead of the
chasers and an exciting sprint saw Martin, Cathal and Murt come in
first, second and third respectively.
Alex Williams (SCC) pipped
Conchubhar O Crualaoich (WW) on the line for fourth place. Conchubhar’s
fifth place was noteworthy as he opted to enter the senior race
although eligible for the Vets’ class. Bill Jordan (SCC) is the new
County Vets. Champion as he beat Stephen Kelly and Paddy Dunne (both
SCC) to the line in their 2 lap race. Orwin Moynagh (SERC) won the
junior race from Luke Maguire (WW) and Andrew Bracken (SERC). Another
great performance by Luke as he only entered the junior race as there
was no underage race – he will not be a junior cyclist for another two
years. There was also a race for novices and the first three were
Owen O’Shea (SERC), Jonathon Brady (SCC) and Hugh Byrne (Barrow
Wheelers).
If Wheelers had a prize for long-distance cyclist
of the year, it would be awarded in 2008 to John O’Flaherty. He set
himself a challenge to cycle from his home in Kilmore Quay to Galway, a
distance of 160 miles. On a Thursday in early September he rose to his
own challenge and completed the trip in ten hours. Well done John.
All
Wexford Wheelers please note that the AGM will take place on Friday,
10th October at 7.30pm in the Riverbank House Hotel. Officer and
committee positions will need to be filled so everyone is asked to
consider taking a turn in getting involved in running the club.
There were twelve riders on last Sunday’s tour which was lead by George Ryan. AGM -10th October
All members, elections, moaning, giving out, wrestling etc. Usual stuff!
